Centuries before the first balloons flew, we knew the shapes of the continents. Look under "cartography." If you can conduct a survey and make a map, you can run the process backward to lay out structures too big to be seen whole from the ground. You say that any UFO sighting is sure to get widespread coverage in the press, but I'd say the opposite is true. There are many UFO sightings around the world, but most of the media rarely reports on the sightings. Typically UFO reports are limited to the "alternative" media of the Internet, or maybe a local news affiliate or newspaper.And also, I wouldn't go so far as to say "no one" has a clue what UFOs are. Sightings that can be explained aside, there's a good chance that some people know what the "unexplainable" sitings are, they just aren't saying what they are.
