What an ill concieved list. Obviously American. Try a few European cars - then you'll see what defines a good car.

but the mileage on these cars is pathetic! in europe smart cars get around 70 mpg, in fact they have way more eco friendly cars in europe. why doesn't anyone in america own a 70 mpg car? in fact, why green transport? why not eco-friendly transport? green doesn't solve the problem, it only postpones it slightly. i want solar powered cars, not cars that burn energy slightly less than others.

A used Civic or Jetta gets the 25-35 mpg range (depending on the year and driver), but doesn't require all of the materials that constructing a new car does. It is also much mroe budget friendly.

Just noticed the price you list for the Smart car. The two prices I have seen are like $15K+ and $18K+ - this was about nine/ten months ago in the midwest. Maybe they have come down with the worsening recession? If so, sweet.

Harry "hopes they have come down so I can fit two in one side of the garage" Wang

Actually, the Yaris hatchback I own for commuting gets 32-34 mpg with my almost all city driving (maybe 0 to 15% highway type driving mixed in). A mostly highway tank of gas gets me 37-39 mpg (with just a bit of city driving mixed in).

The car is about $5K cheaper than the Smart car and gets the same or better mileage than the Smart car. Most of my Toyotas have over delivered on the mpg except for the Prius we sold in anticipation of the new ones...

Better idea: Zipcar.com . If you don't have one in your community, demand one. Best idea: car-free. I have been car-free by choice for over a year now, utilizing my bike, public transportation, and Zipcar and don't miss it one bit. Yes, I made a conscious choice as well when I bought my home and chose my job to ensure I would have these capabilities - you are only 'forced' to have a car if you allow yourself to be. And yes, families can be car-free as well. It's all about choice.
