Plovdiv is an amazing city, much older than Athens or Rome, yet so undiscovered. Visit it if you get a chance - well worthy the trip.

I am so glad that Plovdiv is included:) It is a great city! As far as I know Alex it changed its name several times-
Plovdiv was given various names throughout its long history. It was originally a Thracian settlement by the name of Eumolpias. Philip II of Macedon conquered the area in 342-341 BC and renamed the city Philippoupolis (Greek: Φιλιππούπολις). The later Thracian name for the city, Pulpu-deva, is a translation of Greek Philippou-polis. After the Romans took control of the area, the city was named Latin: Trimontium, meaning the Three Hills. During the Middle Ages the city was known as Philippoupolis in Byzantine Greek and Paldin (Пълдин) or Plavdiv (Плъвдив) in Old Bulgarian, variations of the town's earlier Thracian name. The city was known as Philippopolis in Western Europe well into the early 20th century. The city was known as Filibe in Turkish during the Ottoman Empire.

If you have a chance, visit it:) It's really worth it!

Istanbul??? You mean Constantinopole!!!!

The city was settled by Vizantas who was born in Megara, a greek city, that still exists (only 50km away from Athens, having population about 20000 citizens). Besides Athens, ancient cities that still exist are Sparta, Corinth, Thiva and of course Thessaloniki.

I' m quite surprised that Plovdid is such an old city. Do you know if it had that name since the era of its settlement????

finaly, as far as it concerns turkish ancient cities i think that we have to mention Antioch, a real momentum of the human kind. Does anybody know which its population nowadays???

Thank you...
