Abandoned Quarry to Landscaped Park

Harvey Fite took over this abandoned rock quarry and began to create spaces to display his own sculpture work. Decades later, the work of space creation had taken on a life of its own and the incredible landscaping of the grounds – using the leftover quarry stone – had by then become the center of his life’s work for nearly 40 years, and was eventually (appropriately) named Opus 40. He used methods of the ancient Egyptians to erect amazing monuments but eventually fell victim to the source of his inspiration and materials as he, at the age of 73, drove his lawnmower over a cliff and perished in the quarry below.
