Takahe Mother and Chick

From 1898 to 1948, everyone thought the New Zealand Takahe was extinct. They have a bright red face and bright blue and green plumage. The flightless bird plucks out grass and grasps it with its claw to eat only the softest part at the bottom of the leaf. The takahe throws the rest of their meal away. Its eating habits have kept it endangered while non-native grasses take over their habitat.
