Iiwi

The Iiwi is a Hawaiian honeycreeper. Its raucous call and brilliant red plumage are becoming more and more seldom. Like all honeycreepers, whose beaks have evolved to pollinate and gain sustenance from Hawaiian plants, the Iiwi is threatened by mosquito-borne avian diseases. Global warming creates environments in which mosquitoes can exist at higher elevations. Birds now live above 4,000 feet, but their food sources often can’t.
