Ive always liked this site and find myself brought here through various internet jump sites that have interesting links, but this is the first time I really REALLY disagree with a good deal of what was said.

First off the bio-degradeable phone. You cant say something isnt green because its not entirely green. The point is that this phone is better for the planet then any other phones. And as for it not being entirely recyclable, you actually hit it on the head, you dont just chuck a broken phone, you return it to the store, they give you a new one. What they do with your old broken one is take out the expensive guts then throw the rest away, a lot of times thats the casing, the green casing in this case.

Im not gonna argue much on the skin cell phone, not that it isnt a cool its just years away from existance. Same goes for the water drop game and the motorcycle suit. Both interesting, but not all that impressive.

That brings us to the gloves, which to write them off is just flat out ignorant. When I was poor and in college a real easy way to save money, and power, is to turn the heat down real low and bundle up with clothing. To say that these are dumb because you have to run the computer to use them undermines this whole website. Do you not need a computer to view it and maybe make your life a little greener. They're to be used while AT the computer. You arent gonna put them on and strap a laptop to your hip and go vaccuum. The only thing I'd be worried about is that things like that that constantly run power through a USB port will fry the port with time.

I have no beef with, yes newspapers are usually recycled, but there are more eco friendly ways to get your info, and burning them is far from the best way to dispose of them. Same with the desktop garden, its cute, but not useful.

Another big one, the solar powered lawn mower. How can you not support a fully SOLAR POWERED lawn mower. Interesting enough you do support one in another article you wrote about good green gadgets.... Make up your mind. The fact that it doesnt require a person behind it is actually BETTER. Trying to use obesity as a copout as to why this isnt green is just dumb. I would say that by letting this thing cut your grass for you, your free to go help the planet in some other way.

The avatars I have no words for. Ive never seen them/those websites advertised as "green".

The kettle is dumb, but electric kettles have their benefits, they heat more effeciently, meaning that you waste less energy doing what it is they do, the measuring factor is a side note that helps with waste. As for the claim of it being an issue that its made of plastics what about the DIY Kyoto Wattson you boosted in your article about "Essential Green Gadgets" that doesnt actually do anything. In no way is it actively saving anything, yet its made of plastic and eating up energy. You want to talk about lazy lawn mowing? You need some useless thing to tell you to turn off a light?

The paper shredder, the Swiffer, and the TV I have no beef with. Those were fairly presented as crap.

Now the laptop, much like the phone, is not a great leap forward in green technology but the idea is that its an effort to take something that should be plastic and make it not. You cant condem a company or a product for trying, albeit poorly.

All good items for mockery, except the USB heated gloves. I live in a cold house and just put on a jersey and sometimes a jacket if it's cold when I'm on the computer. Heated fingerless gloves would really make a difference and reduce the temptation to heat the room - thus they are very green.

Cheers, Neil.

A great societal change, a paradigm shift of enormous proportion is falling on the heads of Americans as we speak! We are no longer the "Only" customer for middle eastern oil, and will no longer be coddled and cajoled into over consumption of that product at minimal prices! Americans will awaken to a day when they will compete on world markets with others for this precious commodity! They will do so with a much diluted and devalued dollar. The current massive government bail out scheme will soon cost us in lifestyle and luxury. The great republican depression as it closes over our heads will fuel changes in our way of life we cannot even imagine right now. We will exit this time of trial, a much humbler, less materialistic and extremely environmentally conscientious society. When the Exxons and the GMs and the Citibank's of this system have completed the rape of the American people, and forsaken them and moved on to the richer Arab countries, we the people, will start to rebuild, as a wiser, more savvy, world hardened and humbled bunch. We will be green! We will love and respect the environment and defend it with our lives. We will use wind, solar and ground heat to survive. We will use the best of modern discoveries to assist us. The rules of basic things, like the laws of incorporation will include enforcible environmental responsibilities. Our children will not be born into a world of industrial poisons, lead and mercury and asbestos and gasoline with its deadly carcinogen, the benzine ring will be outlawed. Utopia, at last, utopia where the great sin of corporate America sank into ruin! A place where a dollar is worth less than a soul!

Nice roundup. Good god, it is about TIME somebody took on the Swiffer! There is probably no better example of the green-wash hype -- if it looks green it MUST BE green, right?

Still, there's one green gadget you missed, although I seem to have misplaced the blog link about it. A while ago some Asian company (in Japan, maybe?) put out a little carbon footprint calculator that was, in and of itself, completely and utterly eco-wasteful. So, great. You can calculate your carbon footprint on a gadget that is effectively impacting your carbon footprint (then again, doesn't measuring an outcome always affect it?).

To me, there's no excuse, with websites like -- oh gee, the most obvious -- www.carbonfootprint.com -- or, for cars, www.fueleconomy.gov and www.carFUNfootprint.com (more of a cute site, but does have tips for decreasing auto-related eco-waste). I think Apple even made a widget for the iPhone that allows you to calculate your carbon footprint. Or you could, oh, I dunno, use a computer??
